Here is the honest position on blue topaz: almost all of it is colourless topaz that has been irradiated. We list it anyway, because it does one job better than anything else.
What blue topaz actually is
Blue topaz is natural topaz — aluminium silicate fluoride hydroxide — whose colour has been produced in a laboratory.
Naturally blue topaz exists but is pale, rare and nothing like the vivid material on the market. Essentially every blue topaz you will encounter began as colourless or near-colourless rough and was irradiated to introduce colour centres, then heated to stabilise the result.
The treatment is permanent, stable and universal across the trade. It is not a secret and it is not fraud. But it should be stated plainly, and many sellers do not state it at all.
The three grades

London Blue is the most requested and reads the most serious. Swiss Blue is the brightest and most electric. Sky Blue is the most delicate and least expensive.
These are trade names describing colour outcomes rather than laboratory grades, but they are used consistently enough to be useful.
Is irradiated topaz safe?
Yes, with a caveat worth understanding.
Neutron-irradiated topaz — the London Blue process — retains low-level residual radioactivity immediately after treatment. Material is held in secure storage until it decays to safe levels before release. In the United States this is regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and material must be tested and certified before distribution.
Properly processed and released blue topaz is entirely safe to wear. The concern is with material that has skipped the cooling-off period, which does occasionally surface from unregulated sources. This is a reason to buy through established supply lines rather than the cheapest available parcel, and it is the one thing about blue topaz worth being careful about.
What it is actually good for
Blue topaz occupies a specific and useful position. Because irradiated material is abundant and topaz forms in large clean crystals, you can get scale and clarity that would be unreachable in almost anything else.
Clean stones at 10, 20 and 30 carats are ordinary. If you want a genuinely large blue statement piece — a substantial cocktail ring, a big pendant, oversized earrings — blue topaz gives you that in a way aquamarine, sapphire and spinel simply cannot at reachable levels.
That is the honest case for it. Not rarity, not investment, not provenance. Scale.
Cleavage — the same warning as all topaz
Mohs 8 with perfect basal cleavage. Topaz resists scratching well and splits cleanly under a sharp knock. The hardness number is misleading on its own.
For large stones this matters more, not less — a big table presents a bigger target and there is more material to propagate a cleave. Bezel and protective settings are worth having, and any setter working on topaz should be told what it is, because pressure applied wrongly can cleave a stone on the bench.
Never ultrasonic, never steam, avoid sudden temperature change.
One more caution: coated topaz
Surface-coated topaz — sold as mystic topaz, azotic topaz, rainbow topaz and similar — is colourless topaz with a thin metallic film applied to the pavilion, producing an iridescent multicoloured effect.
The coating is a surface layer only. It scratches, abrades and can be polished off entirely during ordinary repair or cleaning. It is a legitimate product when disclosed, but it is not comparable to irradiated blue topaz in durability, and it should never be sold without explanation.
