Collection FAQ

What styles of mangalsutra does Tinch offer?
Tinch offers a wide range of mangalsutra and chain pendant designs, including traditional South Indian mangalsutra with temple-inspired motifs, Maharashtrian mangalsutra featuring the classic vati (bowl-shaped) pendant, Gujarati mangalsutra with intricate beadwork, and contemporary modern mangalsutra designs from our Modern Mangalsutra House collection.
What is the difference between South Indian, Maharashtrian, and Gujarati mangalsutra styles?
South Indian mangalsutra typically feature a single or double pendant strung on black beads, often with temple or floral motifs. Maharashtrian mangalsutra are recognized by their signature vati pendant design in gold. Gujarati mangalsutra tend to be more elaborate, often incorporating multiple gold and black bead strands with detailed pendant work. What is a modern mangalsutra design?
Modern mangalsutra designs reinterpret the traditional black bead necklace with contemporary settings such as toi-et-moi styles, solitaire pendants, and halo pendant settings, making them suitable for everyday wear as well as traditional occasions. Browse our Modern Mangalsutra House for these designs.
Do you offer toi-et-moi, solitaire, or halo mangalsutra pendants?
Yes, our modern mangalsutra range includes toi-et-moi pendant designs featuring two stones set side by side, classic solitaire mangalsutra pendants with a single diamond, and halo mangalsutra pendants where a center stone is surrounded by smaller diamonds for added sparkle.
Do you offer gemstone or birthstone mangalsutra?
Yes, we offer gemstone mangalsutra pendants featuring colored stones alongside diamonds, as well as birthstone mangalsutra options that let you personalize your pendant with a stone matching your birth month.
What are the black beads on a mangalsutra made of, and why are they significant?
The black beads on a mangalsutra are traditionally made of black glass or onyx and hold cultural and symbolic significance in Indian weddings, representing protection and the bond of marriage. All our mangalsutra designs, whether traditional or modern, retain this signature black bead element.
What metal and diamond quality do you use in your mangalsutra?
Our mangalsutra pendants are handcrafted in 14K and 18K gold, BSI Hallmark certified, and set with IGI-certified lab-grown diamonds. Explore our 18K gold jewellery collection for premium finishes.

About Mangalsutra & Chain Pendants — a buying guide

Three things decide whether a mangalsutra actually gets worn or lives in a locker.

Weight. A daily-wear piece should sit without you noticing it. Ours are built in 14K and 18K gold with the chain gauge matched to the pendant, so nothing drags or twists.

Chain length. Shorter chains sit above the neckline and work under collars and kurtas. Longer chains layer well but catch more, and pair naturally with our diamond necklaces.

Pendant scale. A large pendant reads as occasion wear. A compact one with a well-cut centre stone reads as jewellery you simply own. See also our pendants and pendant sets.

Cluster and halo pendants — a centre diamond ringed by smaller stones, which gives visual size without a larger centre stone. The same logic drives our halo rings and halo studs.

Toi et Moi — two stones side by side, usually a round paired with a pear or marquise. A contemporary reading of a traditional form, and available across rings, pendants and earrings.

Solitaire pendants — a single certified diamond, the quietest option and the easiest to layer. Matches beautifully with solitaire studs.

Step-cut and fancy shapesemerald, Ashoka and moval cuts for anyone who wants something that is not a round brilliant. Gemstone and birthstone versions sit in our natural gemstone collection.

A lab-grown diamond is chemically, optically and physically identical to a mined diamond — the same carbon, the same brilliance, the same hardness — grown above ground instead of extracted. The practical difference is price: a lab-grown diamond mangalsutra typically costs 60–80% less than the equivalent natural-diamond piece, which means a larger or better-graded centre stone for the same budget. Every diamond here is IGI-certified either way, so the grading standard is identical.

  • Ask for the certificate. Every diamond in this collection is IGI-certified with full grading for cut, colour, clarity and carat.
  • Check the chain, not just the pendant. A beautiful pendant on a thin chain will fail. Ours are matched deliberately.
  • Decide 14K or 18K by lifestyle. 18K is richer in colour; 14K is harder and better suited to something worn every single day.
  • Think about the clasp. For a piece you rarely remove, a secure clasp matters more than an elaborate one.

This collection holds over 40 diamond mangalsutra designs in 14K and 18K gold with IGI-certified lab-grown diamonds.
