Chrome tourmaline is coloured by the same element as emerald and tsavorite, and looks it. It is also the least known of the three, which is the only reason more people are not buying it.
What chrome tourmaline actually is
Chrome tourmaline is green dravite or elbaite tourmaline coloured by chromium and vanadium rather than by iron.
That distinction is the entire point. Ordinary green tourmaline is iron-coloured and tends toward olive, forest or yellowish green — pleasant, but muted. Chromium and vanadium produce a vivid, slightly bluish grass green with markedly more saturation and life. It is the same chemistry that colours emerald and tsavorite garnet, and the family resemblance is immediately visible.
The separation cannot be made by eye and requires spectroscopy. A great deal of ordinary green tourmaline is sold as chrome tourmaline, and the two sit at genuinely different levels. If the name matters to you, insist the report confirms chromium and vanadium content rather than simply saying green tourmaline.
Where it comes from
Almost all chrome tourmaline comes from the Umba Valley in northern Tanzania, with smaller quantities from Kenya. The deposit is narrow and the supply correspondingly limited.
This is the same geological region that produces tsavorite, which is not a coincidence — the conditions that concentrate chromium and vanadium in that corridor produce both.
Never treated
Chrome tourmaline is not heated, oiled, irradiated or diffused. There is no accepted treatment and none in use.
Combined with tsavorite, it gives you two genuinely untreated options in vivid green against emerald, where oiling is effectively universal. For buyers who want a green stone with nothing done to it, these are the two answers.
What determines quality
Colour
The dominant factor. Vivid, saturated grass green with a slight blue secondary sits at the top. Yellowish or olive material is likely ordinary green tourmaline rather than chrome, whatever it is called.
Clarity
Eye-clean is the expectation. Chrome tourmaline is generally cleaner than rubellite.
Cut
Pleochroic like all tourmaline, so orientation matters. Judge face-up.
Size
Rarely found above 3ct in fine colour. This is the material's main constraint, and it is a real one — if you want a large vivid green stone, emerald is the practical answer.

Chrome tourmaline's disadvantage against tsavorite is size availability and brilliance — garnet's higher refractive index gives tsavorite more life. Its advantage is that fewer people are looking for it.
Durability and setting
Mohs 7–7.5, no cleavage. Suitable for daily wear with a protective setting.
Yellow gold is traditional for green stones and warms the colour. White metal makes it read cooler and lets the blue secondary show, which suits the material well.
Tourmaline's static charge applies here as elsewhere in the species — expect to clean it more often than you would a garnet.
