Emerald (Panna): A Buyer's Guide
Emerald — Panna — is the only major gemstone where inclusions are expected, oiling is standard practice, and a "flawless" stone is usually a warning sign. Buying well means understanding why.
What emerald actually is
Emerald is beryl coloured green by chromium and vanadium — the same mineral family as aquamarine and morganite. Mohs 7.5–8, which sounds durable, but emerald's real weakness is not hardness. It is the internal fracture network, called the jardin, that forms during crystallisation and makes emerald far more fragile in practice than its Mohs rating suggests.
This is the defining fact about emerald and it drives everything else — the oiling, the grading, the setting choices, and the care instructions.
Panna in Vedic tradition
Emerald is the gemstone of Budha — Mercury. Traditionally set in gold, worn on the little finger, first on a Wednesday. In Vedic practice it is associated with intellect, communication and commerce.
We report the tradition and do not practise it. Weight, metal, finger and timing come from your astrologer. Whether the stone is natural and how heavily it has been treated — that is ours.

Colombian origin carries the strongest reputation, but Zambian material frequently outperforms mid-grade Colombian on clarity. If your priority is a good-looking stone rather than a certificate saying Colombia, say so — it changes what we source.
Oiling — the thing you must understand
Nearly every emerald on the market has been treated with a filler that enters surface-reaching fractures and reduces their visibility. Traditionally cedarwood oil; modern practice also uses polymer resins. This is ancient, universal, and accepted — an untreated emerald of good size and colour is genuinely rare.
What matters is how much. Laboratories grade the extent of enhancement:

A heavily oiled emerald can look better than a lightly oiled one and be a far weaker stone. Oil also degrades — it dries, it can be stripped by ultrasonic cleaning or heat, and the stone's apparent clarity drops when it goes. This is not fraud, it is the nature of the material, but you should know what you own. Every significant emerald we sell comes with a lab report stating the enhancement grade, and we will explain what that grade means for the stone's future.
What determines quality
Colour
The dominant factor by a wide margin. Vivid, saturated, slightly bluish green in a medium to medium-dark tone. Pale stones and yellowish-green stones sit far below regardless of clarity. In emerald more than any other stone, buyers should accept inclusions to get colour.
Clarity
Judged on an entirely different standard. Inclusions are expected. What matters is whether they are positioned where they threaten the stone's structure, and how much filler is holding the appearance together. A completely clean, large, cheaply offered emerald is almost always synthetic, glass, or another green stone.
Cut
The emerald cut — a rectangular step cut with cut corners — exists specifically for this stone. The corners are removed because sharp corners are where a fractured crystal chips during setting. This is engineering, not fashion.
The alternatives worth knowing
Tsavorite garnet is a green garnet from Kenya and Tanzania. Never oiled, never treated, considerably cleaner, and higher in brilliance than emerald. Chrome tourmaline from Tanzania's Umba Valley offers a similar vivid green from the same chromium chemistry, also untreated. If you want a green stone rather than specifically an emerald, either is often the better buy and comes with none of emerald's care complications. How we source
Emerald is bought to order. Give us a carat range and your view on acceptable enhancement level. We source from Jaipur, Bogotá and Zambian supply lines, share real photographs and video, and supply an independent lab report with the enhancement grade stated. Turnaround is typically 3 to 7 days for commercial material and two to four weeks for fine minor-oil stones. We work this way with clients worldwide; nothing about the process requires you to be in Mumbai.
Setting and caring for a Panna
Setting emerald is skilled work. Pressure during prong setting can propagate an existing fracture, and heat can strip oil. We set emerald with protective designs — bezels, halos, or heavier prongs at the corners — and we do it cold wherever possible.
Care instructions that matter: never ultrasonic clean, never steam clean, avoid heat, remove before swimming in chlorinated water, clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth only. An emerald ring worn daily will need re-oiling eventually. That is normal and we can do it.

Frequently asked questions
Is oiling an emerald a form of fraud?
No. Oiling is ancient, universal and accepted throughout the trade — nearly every emerald on the market is treated. What matters is disclosure and degree. Laboratories grade enhancement from none through minor, moderate to significant, and that grade should appear on the certificate. Undisclosed heavy oiling is the problem, not oiling itself.
Why should a flawless emerald make me suspicious?
Emerald forms with an internal fracture network called the jardin, which is characteristic of the species. A large, completely clean, cheaply offered emerald is almost always synthetic, glass, green quartz or another mineral entirely. Some inclusions are evidence the stone is what it claims to be.
Can I clean my emerald ring in an ultrasonic cleaner?
Never. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning strip the oil from an emerald's fractures, and the stone's apparent clarity drops immediately and visibly. Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth only. Avoid heat, and remove the ring before swimming in chlorinated water.
Does an emerald need re-oiling over time?
Yes, eventually. Oil dries and degrades, particularly in a ring worn daily. This is normal and expected for the material rather than a defect, and we can re-oil emeralds we have supplied. Plan for it the way you would plan for re-tipping prongs.
Is Zambian emerald inferior to Colombian?
No. Colombian carries the strongest reputation and the classic slightly-bluish green, but Zambian material frequently outperforms mid-grade Colombian on clarity and shows an excellent deep colour. If you want a good-looking stone rather than a certificate naming Colombia, Zambian is often the better choice.
Should I buy tsavorite or chrome tourmaline instead of emerald?
If you specifically want emerald, no. If you want a green gemstone, both are worth serious consideration: never oiled or treated, considerably cleaner, higher in brilliance, and carrying none of emerald's care restrictions. We will recommend them openly where they suit what you are actually after.
