Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj): A Buyer's Guide

Yellow sapphire — Pukhraj — is the most sought gemstone in India, and the most misrepresented. This is what you need to know before you buy one.

What yellow sapphire actually is

Yellow sapphire is corundum, the same mineral as blue sapphire and ruby, coloured yellow to golden by trace iron. It sits at Mohs 9 on the hardness scale — second only to diamond — which is why it survives decades of daily wear on a hand without abrading. That durability matters more than most buyers realise, because a Pukhraj is typically worn continuously rather than occasionally.

It is not to be confused with citrine, yellow topaz, or heat-treated yellow beryl, all of which are sold as Pukhraj substitutes in India, sometimes honestly as "upratna" and sometimes not. Citrine in particular is visually similar to an untrained eye. The only reliable separation is a laboratory report.

Pukhraj in Vedic tradition

In Vedic astrology, yellow sapphire is the gemstone of Brihaspati — Jupiter — and is traditionally recommended to strengthen Jupiter's influence in a birth chart. It is customarily set in gold, worn on the index finger of the right hand, and traditionally first worn on a Thursday morning. Practitioners generally advise a minimum weight relative to body weight, with prescriptions varying between traditions.

Ceylon origin carries genuine weight in the Indian market, partly on quality and partly on tradition. Whether it is the right choice for you is a fair question, and one we will answer honestly rather than steering you to the more expensive stone by default.

Heated or unheated — the question that matters most

The large majority of yellow sapphire on the market is heat-treated. Heating is a permanent, stable, industry-accepted process that improves colour and clarity. It is not fraud, and a heated stone is still a natural sapphire.

But unheated stones sit in an entirely different category, and in the astrological market many buyers specifically require unheated material. This creates an obvious incentive to misrepresent, and it is the most common deception in Pukhraj sales in India.

What determines quality

Colour

The most desirable yellow sapphire shows a vivid, evenly saturated golden yellow with no brown, green or grey secondary tone. Pale lemon material and overly dark honey-brown material both sit well below. Colour is the dominant factor — more than clarity, more than size.

Clarity

Yellow sapphire is generally cleaner than ruby or emerald. Eye-clean stones are the expectation rather than the exception, so visible inclusions matter noticeably. Silk — fine needle inclusions — can soften brilliance if dense.

Cut

Indian cutting often prioritises weight retention over brilliance, producing deep stones that look smaller face-up than their carat weight suggests and can show windowing. A well-cut 3ct stone can outperform a poorly cut 4ct one visually. Judge the stone face-up, not on the certificate weight.

Weight

Large clean material is disproportionately scarce, and scarcity scales sharply with size. Astrological prescriptions frequently call for 5ct and above, which is precisely where the market gets difficult and where misrepresentation concentrates.

Turnaround is typically 3 to 7 days for heated commercial material and two to four weeks for fine unheated Ceylon stones in larger sizes.

Setting a Pukhraj

Tradition calls for gold, and 18K or 22K yellow gold suits the stone visually as well — the warm metal reinforces the yellow. For astrological wear, an open-back setting that allows the stone to contact the skin is often specified; we can do this, though it does reduce protection.

At Mohs 9 the stone tolerates prong settings without concern. For a ring worn continuously, we generally recommend a slightly heavier shank than fashion pieces use — the metal wears, not the stone.
