The 4Cs of Diamond Buying Explained: Carat, Cut, Clarity, Colour
Share
The 4Cs of diamond buying are Carat (weight), Cut (how well it's shaped and faceted), Clarity (how free it is of internal flaws), and Colour (how close to colourless it is). Cut has the single biggest impact on how a diamond actually looks — a well-cut smaller diamond will out-sparkle a poorly-cut larger one.
What Is Carat, and Does Bigger Always Mean Better?
Carat is a unit of weight (0.2 grams per carat), not size directly — though larger carat weights generally do look bigger. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look noticeably different in size depending on how they're cut, which is exactly why carat alone doesn't tell you much without the other three Cs.
What Is Cut, and Why Does It Matter Most?
Cut refers to how precisely a diamond's facets are shaped and angled — it controls how light enters, bounces around inside, and exits the stone as sparkle. An excellent cut grade makes a diamond appear brighter and larger than its actual carat weight; a poor cut can make even a flawless, colourless diamond look dull. If you have to prioritise one C on a budget, cut is where quality shows up most visibly.
What Is Clarity, and How Much Does It Actually Matter?
Clarity measures internal inclusions and external blemishes, graded from Flawless down through Included. Most inclusions at the higher grades (VVS, VS) are invisible to the naked eye — meaning you can often choose a slightly lower, more affordable clarity grade without any visible difference, and put the savings toward a better cut instead.
What Is Colour, and What Grade Should You Choose?
Colour is graded from D (completely colourless) to Z (visibly yellow or brown), with most fine jewellery using diamonds in the D-J range. Colour differences become genuinely hard to notice once mounted in gold, especially yellow or rose gold, which is why many buyers choose a mid-range colour grade (G-I) and redirect that budget toward cut and carat instead.
How Should You Actually Prioritise the 4Cs on a Budget?
A practical approach most jewellers recommend: never compromise on cut, since it's what your eye actually sees; choose clarity in the VS-SI range where inclusions are typically invisible without magnification; select colour based on the metal setting (whiter for platinum/white gold, more flexible for yellow/rose gold); and let carat be the final variable you adjust to fit your budget.
Where Lab-Grown Diamonds Fit Into the 4Cs
The 4Cs apply identically to lab-grown and natural diamonds — a lab-grown diamond is graded on the same scale, by the same certifying bodies (IGI, GIA). The practical difference is that lab-grown diamonds let you get a higher grade across more of the 4Cs for the same budget, since you're not paying the rarity premium mined diamonds carry.
The Bottom Line
Understanding the 4Cs isn't about chasing perfect grades across the board — it's about knowing where to spend and where you can comfortably save. Every piece across our engagement ring collection comes with full 4C documentation via IGI certification — see our guide to reading your certificate to know exactly what each grade means on paper.
