How to Tell If a Diamond Is Real: The Complete At-Home Test Guide

A real diamond scratches glass, sinks in water, fogs up and clears quickly when you breathe on it, and lets almost no light pass through when placed table-down on newsprint. No single home test is fully reliable on its own — the only certain way to confirm a diamond is real is professional certification from a lab like IGI or GIA.

Does the Fog Test Actually Work?

Breathe on the diamond the way you would fog a mirror. A real diamond disperses heat so efficiently that the fog clears in a second or two. A fake (cubic zirconia, glass, moissanite) holds the fog noticeably longer. This test is quick and mostly reliable, but moissanite — a lab-created diamond simulant, different from a lab-grown diamond — can sometimes fool it too.

Does the Water Test Actually Work?

Drop the loose stone into a glass of water. Diamond has high density, so a genuine stone sinks immediately. Most fakes are less dense and float or sink slowly. This only works with a loose, unmounted stone — it tells you nothing about a diamond already set in jewellery.

Does the Scratch Test Actually Work?

A diamond is the hardest natural material and will scratch glass easily. This test works, but it's also destructive to whatever you're scratching and risky for the stone's setting — most jewellers don't recommend it, and it won't distinguish a real diamond from moissanite, which is also extremely hard.

What About the Newspaper Test?

Place the loose stone table-down over newspaper text. A diamond's internal structure bends light so effectively that you shouldn't be able to read the text through it. A fake, with different optical properties, often lets the text show through blurred but legible. This works reasonably well for cut diamonds but isn't useful for uncut or rough stones.

Why Lab-Grown Diamonds Pass Every One of These Tests

This is the detail most home-test guides skip: a lab-grown diamond is chemically and physically identical to a mined one, so it passes every single test above exactly like a natural diamond would. Home tests can only tell you whether a stone is a genuine diamond or a simulant (cubic zirconia, glass, moissanite) — they cannot tell you whether that diamond is lab-grown or natural. Only certification does that.

The Only Test That's Actually Conclusive

Professional verification uses tools home tests can't replicate: a jeweller's loupe to check for natural inclusions or growth patterns, a thermal/electrical conductivity tester, and ultimately a gemological lab report.
