The point is the whole problem

Pear is a beautiful shape and a structurally awkward one. All the vulnerability sits at the tip — it is the thinnest part of the stone and the part most likely to chip against a door frame or a car key. Most pear rings solve this with a V-shaped prong over the tip. A bezel solves it more completely by wrapping the entire perimeter in metal. Nothing is exposed.

What you gain and what you give up

Bezel settings sit lower on the finger than prongs, so the ring does not snag and is genuinely comfortable under gloves or during work with your hands. The trade-off is light: prongs let light enter from the sides, a bezel does not. A bezel-set pear will read slightly less brilliant than a prong-set one of the same stone. In exchange, it will still be intact in twenty years.

Pear is one of the most efficient shapes per carat, second only to marquise. The elongated silhouette lengthens the finger, and worn with the point facing the fingertip it draws the eye along the hand rather than across it.
