Why oval is the efficient choice

Oval is cut shallower and wider than a round of the same carat weight, so it covers noticeably more of the finger per rupee spent. A 1 ct oval reads closer to a 1.25 ct round from above. It also elongates the finger visually, which is why it has quietly overtaken round as the most requested shape for engagement rings in the last few years.

What four prongs do here

Four prongs at the compass points leave the long sides of the oval completely open. That matters more on oval than on round: the elongated silhouette is the entire reason to choose the shape, and additional prongs interrupt the outline. The trade-off is that oval has two slightly more exposed ends, so the prongs are positioned to shield them.

The bow-tie question

Most ovals show a faint dark band across the centre — the bow-tie effect, caused by the way light enters an elongated brilliant cut. It is normal, and how visible it is depends entirely on cut quality rather than colour or clarity grade.
